april fools - thankful #14

i've never been a big april fooler, but there were some i rather enjoyed yesterday:

• the announcement of a new star trek movie, excelsior, starring george takei's sulu as the captain of the transwarp-equipped prototype. as the friend who posted it on facebook told me later, "i wish..."

• college football star andrew luck decides to postpone the NFL for another year, opting instead to play his final year at stanford; USC protests! speaking of "i wish..."

• a forbes.com blogger declared that republican frontrunner mitt romney had dropped out of the presidential contest and conceded to rick santorum. what was especially funny about this one is that apparently, it got taken seriously and tweeted, to the point that forbes had to delete the original post (the curious can find it on the author's personal blog)! i found another, similar post after april fool's day which i liked even better (here).

it may seem trivial, but i'm thankful for a good joke and the ability to appreciate it. it points us to God and is a hint of where we come from and who we really are. there is something wonderful, even transcendent about humor. and there is something delightful about laughter at someone's cleverness. is there anything more distinctively human -- or a more surprising hint at God's own character?
